Readers Workshop Grade 1 Word Detectives: Strategies for Using High-Frequency Words and for Decoding guides you through all three Bends I to III of the If Then Unit (spiral bound 2016 edition), Sessions 1 to 18. The lesson plans include all components of the Mini-lessons: Connection, Teaching point, Teaching, Active Engagement, link, Partner Read, Mid-Workshop Teaching, Conferring, and Share. The product includes a unit plan, monthly calendar, essential questions, enduring understanding, objectives, and Common Core State Standards. This unit will teach students strategies to understand and figure out words so that they are able to read more challenging books and become active problem solvers when reading. Students will learn to become word detectives, being on the lookout for difficult words, using what they know to solve those words, and checking their attempts. In Bend II, students are ready to draw on prior knowledge, increase their bank of high frequency words, and to use known words to help figure out unknown words. Bend III focuses on ways that readers look closely at words and use visual information effectively. Students will use their phonics knowledge to solve words, as well as using knowledge of common spelling patterns, contractions, and compound words. Throughout the unit, the students will develop their fluency skills.
